The MHRA (the medicines regulator) approved it in the UK on 11 June 2026. But before you rush to the first source you find online to buy it, it’s important to know many things about it. Spoiler: It doesn’t exactly work like the injection. Let’s start from the basics. ### So, what exactly is the Wegovy pill? The Wegovy pill is an oral tablet containing semaglutide, the same active ingredient that the injection has. That ingredient is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a hormone your gut naturally releases after you eat. It basically tells your brain that you're full, slows down digestion, and helps regulate blood sugar. Semaglutide simply goes and mimics that hormone but with more intensity. The pill works on the same mechanism, just gets absorbed in your body differently. And that changes a lot of things. ### How is the Wegovy pill different from the injection? The injection goes straight under your skin and into your bloodstream. Simple, direct, done once a week. No specific requirements for it to get absorbed in your body. It’s different with the pill because semaglutide is a protein and your stomach is designed to break proteins down. If you simply take the pill at a random time your stomach would destroy the medication before it ever reaches your bloodstream. So Novo Nordisk developed something called SNAC (sodium N-(8-[2-hydroxybenzoyl] amino) caprylate) technology. It is a compound that acts as a shield in your stomach. This allows semaglutide to absorb directly through the stomach lining before your gut acid gets to it. But for SNAC to work, there are some terms and conditions: - You must take it first thing in the morning, before anything else - Only with a small glass of plain water (up to 120 ml). No coffee, no juice, not even sparkling water. - And then strict fast for at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications #### The morning routine in practice You may think that the pill is too demanding, and difficult to adjust it in your routine. Honestly, it’ll only feel like that for the first week or two. After that it becomes automatic. Most men find it easier than remembering a weekly injection because it fits into an existing morning routine. The pill has its own benefits: - No refrigeration required. - Travel friendly - Great option for people facing a needle phobia But nothing matters more than the numbers. So here’s what they say. ### What do the numbers actually say? The approval of the pill is based on the OASIS 4 trial. That was a phase 3 randomised controlled trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Here's what they found at 64 weeks (placebo means an inactive dummy treatment given for comparison): - Average weight loss of 16.6% with full adherence (vs 2.7% with placebo) - 13.6% average loss even for people who didn’t stick to the full dose - 79.2% of participants on the pill lost at least 5% of body weight - 63% lost at least 10% - 30% lost 20% or more - Serious adverse events were less frequent in the semaglutide group (3.9%) than placebo (8.8%) ### More than weight loss #### The visceral fat problem For men, the idea of weight is a bit different than for women. Most of the weight in a man’s body comes from visceral fat, the fat stored around your organs: liver, heart, pancreas, intestines. You can't always see it. Some men may not even look overweight, but they can be carrying a lot of weight internally. Visceral fat can be very harmful. It drives inflammation, insulin resistance (the body not responding properly to the hormone insulin), cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. And men on average carry more of it at any given BMI (body mass index) than women. Here’s where GLP-1 medications help. Agonists like semaglutide are particularly effective at reducing visceral fat. Research published in the International Journal of Obesity found that semaglutide reduced visceral adipose tissue and improved the ratio of muscle mass to visceral fat. This matters far more than the number on the scales. #### Testosterone and weight loss More body fat does not just affect how you look, but also your hormone profile directly. Fat cells contain an enzyme called aromatase, which converts testosterone to oestrogen. So, the higher the fat, the lower the testosterone levels in your body. And this affects your energy, muscle mass, mood, libido, and sleep. Research presented at the Endocrine Society's 2025 annual meeting reported higher testosterone in men who lost 10% of body weight on these medicines; it is a conference abstract and not yet peer-reviewed. So, if you feel all of the things mentioned above and think that it’s just age, you may want to think again. #### Cardiovascular risk Men tend to develop cardiovascular disease about 10 years earlier than women on average. Culprit? Obesity. Visceral obesity to be particular. The OASIS 4 trial data showed that participants achieving significant weight loss with oral semaglutide also saw improvements in systolic blood pressure, lipid profiles, and inflammatory markers. The conversation just shifted from just your looks to your heart, your arteries, and your metabolic baseline. ### Side effects: what you're likely to experience If you’ve tried or have known about the side effects of Mounjaro injection, you’ll feel familiar with these as well: - Nausea (usually improves after the first few weeks) - Constipation - Diarrhoea or loose stools - Reflux or heartburn - Reduced appetite (actually an effect more than a side effect) The good news: Based on clinical data, GI related side effects in men tend to be slightly less severe than in women on average. You’ll still have to go through an adjustment phase, but most men report things settling down after 4–6 weeks. Now we know what you may be wondering: Can I have alcohol when I’m on weight loss medications? What men should know about alcohol on a GLP-1 - stronger effects, appetite changes, and why to tell your clinician about cardiovascular medications first. ### Pill vs injection: the practical differences The pill won't replace the injection for everyone and not everyone should be thinking about switching as well. We’ve written the differences in lifestyle with both above. Some men will prefer the injection for exactly that reason. ### Frequently asked questions **Can I get the Wegovy pill in the UK right now?** The MHRA approved it on 11 June 2026. It has been available on private prescription in the UK since July 2026. NHS accessibility will take more time. NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) would need to conduct its own review before that happens. **Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?** No. Both contain oral semaglutide, but Rybelsus is a lower-dose tablet (up to 14 mg) licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is 25 mg and licensed specifically for weight management in adults with obesity or overweight and a weight-related health condition. **Is oral semaglutide safe for men?** Clinical trial data shows a safety profile consistent with injectable semaglutide. Men in trials generally reported gastrointestinal side effects slightly less frequently than women. Common side effects include nausea, constipation, and reflux, particularly in the early dose-escalation weeks. Please note: oral semaglutide is not suitable for everyone; the clinician screens your medical history, and the patient information leaflet carries the full list. Please disclose your full medication list, including cardiovascular drugs and alcohol intake, before starting. **Can GLP-1 medications affect testosterone levels?** Possibly. Excess body fat increases aromatase activity, which converts testosterone to oestrogen and suppresses natural testosterone levels. One conference study (ENDO 2025) reported higher testosterone in men who lost 10% of body weight on these medicines; it is not yet peer-reviewed. **What is the Wegovy pill dosing schedule?** It starts at 1.5 mg and escalates gradually over approximately 12 weeks up to the maintenance dose of 25 mg. Available doses are 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, and 25 mg. **How is the Wegovy pill different from the injection?** You take the pill daily and the injection weekly. Both have the same active ingredient. The pill requires a strict empty-stomach routine in the morning and no refrigeration. Average weight loss in the main trials was 13.6% with the tablet (25mg, OASIS 4, 64 weeks) and 18.7% with Wegovy 7.2mg (STEP UP, 72 weeks): separate trials, not a head-to-head comparison. **Will the NHS prescribe the Wegovy pill?** Not initially. NHS prescribing requires a separate NICE technology appraisal. The Wegovy injection received a restricted NICE recommendation in 2023, limiting NHS prescribing to specialist weight management services. Oral semaglutide (the pill) is likely to follow a similar path. **Why does the dose start so low?** To keep side effects manageable. It starts at 1.5 mg and climbs through 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg with at least a month at each step. **Can I switch from my injections to the pill?** Usually yes. Men on the 2.4 mg weekly injection can move straight to the 25 mg daily tablet, subject to clinical assessment. Sources (11) - Novo Nordisk, Wegovy pill MHRA approval announcement, 11 June 2026.
